Zuzu and the Finger Dances

I’m so bored. I'm sure I don’t have to tell you what Petal’s doing. Or should I say not doing?

The ogre stays in his room too much, not that I would ever play with him. He just sits there and stares at a big rectangular light with bugs all over it, and he's always performing some kind of finger dance on his desktop. His fingers should be tired by now. Well, actually, the fingers seem to take a lot of breaks while the ogre just keeps staring at the light.

I think the ogre can't see me from the side of his head until he whispers my name, the name the humans gave me against my will. He doesn't even look at me when he whispers, and his fingers never stop dancing. As soon as I hear my name whispered, I slink quietly back into the invisible places.

I’ve had too many names. I know my real name. No one knows it anymore but me. No one speaks it, so I only answer to aliases. Well, I don’t usually answer at all, but you know what I mean.

The ogre has a mate, and she’s a girl. I know they are both human, but the girl doesn’t seem like an ogre. That doesn’t make sense, so I stay away from her anyway, just to be safe. Like the ogre, the girl human has her own special daytime room, and it too contains a big light (and bugs) to stare at all day. And the girl also does finger dances, but not the same ones as the ogre. Related, but not the same. And her finger dances are faster.

Unlike the ogre, the girl human talks a lot to her big light, and the light talks back. They talk and talk and talk. And talk. Apparently, they can’t get enough of each other.

That must be a lot better than just staring at your big light without ever saying anything, or hearing anything. Poor giant ogre. Maybe his big light is mad at him.

I won’t let the ogre or the girl get too close to me, but I wish they wouldn’t ignore me for such long periods of time.

Both of them are still just sitting there, offering finger dances to the big lights. I don’t trust the big lights.

I guess I’ll go outside again. Petal won't go with me.
